Pay Range: $21.40 - $25.47 per hour

Job Summary:

The Lab assistant provides essential support to the pathology department by assisting with administrative workflow, reference lab requests, and organization of slides and blocks,

The role ensures efficient daily operations and accurate timely support to pathologists, residents, and laboratory staff as well as hospital clinicians and outside labs and practices,

Essential Functions:

Reference Lab and Consult Case Management

- Fulfill requests form physician offices and reference laboratories

- Prepare, package, and send out specimen, slides, and blocks

- Track and document all send-outs to ensure proper chain of custody

- Return consult slides and material to originating facilities

Administrative and Office Support

- Scan, fax, and distribute reports and documentation as needed

- Assist with generating and organizing QA (quality assurance) reports

- Maintain organized filing systems for blocks, slides, and requisitions

- Support communication between Pathology, clinical units, and outside facilities

- Assist with basic clerical tasks including copying, document prep, and record maintenance

Specimen Handling and Workflow Support

- Pick up and transport specimen from hospital units and other departments

- Accession specimen into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) following established protocols

- Assist the accessioning area with labeling, sorting and organizing incoming cases

- Pull, file, and organize paraffin blocks and histology slides

- Prepare cases and materials for Tumor Boards and special conferences

- Support Pathologists and Residents with case retrieval and slide pulls

General Lab Support

- Restock supplies and maintain cleanliness of shared work areas

- Assist with non-technical equipment logs (startup/shutdown) as directed

- Follow laboratory safety procedures, HIPAA guidelines, and chain of custody requirements

Education

- Education: Highschool diploma or GED required

Experience

- Previous laboratory, medical office, or healthcare experience preferred

- Knowledge of medical terminology and/or pathology terminology a plus

- Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills

- Ability to follow detailed instructions and documentation standards

Physical Requirements

- Ability to stand, walk, and move between departments for extended periods

- Manual dexterity for handling slides, blocks, paperwork

Work environment

- Able to function in a fast paced environment with frequent interactions with staff, couriers, and other departments

- Office and Anatomic pathology laboratory settings with exposure to biological specimen (with required PPE)
